Richard Furman Jenkinson - Sergeant |
Richard was born Aug 1831 in Sumter Co. SC. He was 32 when he enlisted in Co A 2nd/14th Battalion SC Cavalry. Enlisted by Capt. William Nettles at Camp Hampton near Columbia SC for the 12 months. He has 12 cards in his archival file. This unit was engaged in battles in South Carolina until march 1864 when it was sent to Virginia and assigned to General Butler's Brigade. Engaged in bitter fighting at Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Hawes Shop, Cold Harbor, The Petersburg and Carolina Campaigns. He is detailed twice to bring in soldiers who had not reported. Had been assigned as Ordinance Sgt. [Supply Depot was at Cheraw SC ] 5 August he lost his horse and given a 40 day leave to find a horse. He did not and was reduced in rank to Pvt. The 5th Joined General Johnson and surrendered with the Army of Tenn. 26 April 1865. He died 12 Sept 1905 and is buried at Andrews Chapel, Summerton, Clarendon Co. SC

John McCuen Rowe - Private |
John McCuen Rowe, born 10-4-1830. From Clarendon County. Enlisted January 2, 1862 in Company A, 14th Battalion, SC Cavalry. The 14th & 17th Battalions consolidated to form the 5th SC Cavalry on January 18, 1863. Rowe served in Company H (Santee Guerillas) . He was detailed as a gunsmith at Pocotaligo until the Regiment was ordered to Virginia in 1864. The 5th SC Cavalry participated in battles at The Wilderness; Spotsylvania Court House; North Anna; Hawes Shop; Cold Harbor; Defense of Petersburg; and Carolina Campaign, until Johnston's surrender on April 26, 1865.
J.M. Rowe died 4-6-1882 and is buried in St Pauls Cemetery, Summerton, SC. Brother of E.B. Rowe, Co. D, 4th SC Cavalry.

George was born in Kelton, Union Co. SC Nov. 1844 he enlisted in Co K 5th SC Cavalry at Columbia on 27 Jan 1863[ Ferguson's] Co. K was known as [ The Mountain Rangers] He has 16 cards in his archival file. He is hospitalized twice for illness. He lost his horse and was on detached duty to find one from 19 Dec 1863 - 8 Jan 1864. He is sick in the hospital at Richmond with boil's on his arm, he has no horse. On 23 Aug 1864 he is in the Jackson Hosp at Richmond he is assigned to Butler's Brigade. His Regiment was in the following battles: Wilderness, Spotsylvania C.H., Haw's Shop, Cold Harbor, Siege at Petersburg, Louisa C.H., Trevilian Station, Reame's Station, Vaughn Road, Burges Mill and the Carolina Campaign. May God rest his soul. He is relate to me thru a distant marriage.
